The Dubliners - Song for Ireland
The Dubliners – Song for Ireland Performed by Luke Kelly （ザ・ダブリナーズのメンバー、ルーク・ケリー）
「Song for Ireland」は、スコットランド人のフィリップ・コルクロー（Phil Colclough）と妻のジュン（June）がアイルランドに住んでいたときに作った歌で、アイルランドの愛唱歌となり、後にイギリスのフォークシンガーRalph McTellがカバーし、その後にメアリー・ブラック（Mary Black：1955-）など多くの歌手がカバーしました。今日は馴染み深い、メアリー・ブラックとhe Dubliners（ザ・ダブリナーズ）の歌で紹介します。
「Song for Ireland」は、親しみやすい抒情歌ですが、その歌詞にはアイルランドという国の歴史や想いというものが暗喩として込められています。アイルランドがイギリスから独立して、共和国となったのが1938年、イギリス連邦を脱退したのが1949年、但し北アイルランド6州は英国に属しています。ここでイギリスとアイルランドの政治的な関係などを書く事は割愛しますが、一つの民族が自由を求める心が、大空を自由に飛ぶFalcons（はやぶさ）に託されています。また、「they twist and turn all in you e’er blue sky」（あなたのいつまでも変わらね青い空で彼らは捻じり全てを覆す・・・と訳しましたが）の言葉は、はやぶさたちが大空を翻って飛ぶ様子を現すと共に、イギリス人たちがアイルランドの歴史や風俗・慣習などの生活を捻じ曲げる、覆すという意味も読み取れます。（但し、意訳は多分に個人的な解釈が含まれた誤訳かもしれませんが、単にアイルランドの美しい風土を愛する歌詞と読んでも、それはそれで美しい詩です。）
アイルランドは長い間（戦争という意味ではなく）戦ってきた国です。「国」のために戦うというのは、多くのオリンピック選手たちを見てもわかりますが、「国」という行政機構や抽象的な国家の概念のためではなく、この歌に描かれているような生活、肉親、友、風土を愛するという、極めて素朴な人間的な感情に由来します。ただ、それを最もらしい理論を作り、政治的に利用しようとする「国家」というものが必ず顔を出して、それを利用しようとします。だからこそ、この歌の歌詞にある「Dreaming in the night, I saw a land where no man had to fight」の心を忘れない人間でありたいとも思っています。
そしてまた、この日本でも、やはり「耐え忍ぶ」という戦いを強いられている人たちがいることも忘れてはいけないと思います。ところで、アイルランドは2005年の英エコノミスト誌の調査で最も住みやすい国に選らばれています。住みやすいということはSong for Irelandの歌からも偲べますね。アイルランドのように、長く耐えてきた国の人たちは、自由の貴さと良い国の在り方を私たちよりも知っているのかもしれません。
