ベルベイカー：Belle Baker (25 December 1893 or 1895- 29 April 1957) は、1920年代の初めの、いわゆるジャズエイジに活躍した女優・ラグタイムシンガーです。1910年に週3ドルでミュージックホールで歌いはじめてから、歌唱力が認められました。当時、寄席・ブロードウェイ・ラジオで人気があり、多くのレコードを出しています。もともと、太平洋戦争前のアメリカの大衆文化は、当時の規制もあって、日本では紹介される機会が少なかったことも原因ですが、日本ではほとんど忘れられている歌手です。
「素敵なあなた」は、ジャズのスタンダードナンバー。歌を聴けば、聴いたことがある人も多いと思います。アンドリュ－・シスターズのものが有名ですが、アンドリュ－・シスターズのレコードリリースが1937年11月24日、ベル・ベイカーがそれより1ヶ月ほど遅い、12月21日でした。アンドリュ－・シスターズ版は、もう少し派手なアレンジで、コーラスの魅力をいかしたものですが、私は、ベル・ベイカーのほうが落ち着いていて好みです。ベル・ベイカーは、ドイツ語の一方言であるイディッシュ語が堪能でしたので、この歌が気に入ったのかもしれません。加藤和彦さんの「アラウンド・ザ・ワールド」、サビの部分似ていますね。
ベル・ベイカーは、もうＣＤも発売されていないので、YouTubeにアップされているものは貴重です。聴けるは今のうちかもしれませんので、他の曲も載せておきます。
せかせかと何かと忙しい現代では、曲のテンポが遅いと思う人もいるかもしれませんが、この程度のペースでいいんですよ。ゆったりしていて、心地よくありませんか？で、歌詞の内容は邦題の通り「あなたに出会うまで失望していたけど、明るくなったわ。あなたってイケメンね、ホントに素敵！これってなんて言えばいいのかいしら、本当に素敵！」他に難しいことは言っていません。
