「ターン、ターン、ターン」（Turn, Turn, Turn）は、ピート・シーガー（Pete Seeger、1919年5月3日 – 2014年1月27日）が旧約聖書「コヘレトの言葉」（新共同訳聖書：The Bible, The New Interconfessional Translation）にある言葉を引用して作曲した1959年の作品です。ピート・シーガーはこの歌を1962年にリリース、次いで1963年にジュディ・コリンズが彼女のアルバムでカバーし、その後多くのフォーク系歌手、グループがカバーしました。特に有名なものは1965年にフォークロック・バンド「ザ・バーズ」（The Byrds）がカバーしたもので、ビルボード26位のスマッシュヒットとなりました。
「コヘレトの言葉」は大まかに言うと、神の意志によって世の中の全てのことはあらかじめ定められたているという教えです。但し、ピート・シーガーはこの旧約聖書の言葉をそのまま取り入れたのではなく、独自の思想をこの歌に込めています。

ピート・シーガーはこの言葉の「There is a time for everything」（すべてのことには時がある）という、あらかじめ定められた時＝運命というものをそのまま受け入れたのではなく、人や社会の移り変わりの中で生きる意味を暗示させています。その言葉が各節の冒頭にある「To everything, turn, turn, turn. There is a season, turn, turn, turn. And a time to every purpose under heaven.」で、私たちは天国の下で為すべき目的を持って生きていると意味にも解されます。
古来、多くの人が世の無常感や喪失感を体験してきましたが、また同時に、世に多くの善意ある人たちがいることも実感して暮らしてきました。時は休むことなく移り変わってゆきます。無情な災害に対して何もできないことに無力感を覚えた方もいられると思います。しかし、そんなあなたにも「天国の下で為すべき目的」が必ずあり、世の中の誰かを支えているのです。こうした考えはキリスト教などの宗教に限ったことではありません。中国の「荘子」にも「無用の用」の言葉があります。一見何の役にも立っていないような物も立派に何かの役に立っている。」という思想です。ボランティア活動を行うことも大切なことですが、普段の生活、仕事や買い物を続けることも、そうした直接に支援される方たちを底辺で支えることになるのです。一見平凡と思える暮らしで築きあげてきたものの中にこそ前進する活力があります。経済＝経世済民は人々を救う基本でもあります。そうした普段ながらの平凡な生活があなたにとっては余り意義を感じられないことであっても、広い世の中から見れば、あなたの「時」には大事な目的と意義があるのです。
より良く生きることに遅すぎるということもありませんが、時は待ってはくれません。「ターン、ターン、ターン」の最後の一行「A time for peace, I swear it’s not too late」の言葉のメッセージは今も生き続けていると思います。
