「涙あふれて」マリアンヌ・フェイスフル
「涙あふれて」（As Tears Go By）はイギリスの歌手・女優マリアンヌ・フェイスフル（Marianne Faithfull 1946-）の1964年のデビュー曲で、ローリング・ストーンズのミック・ジャガーとキース・リチャードが作ったものです。1966年にはローリング・ストーンズもセルフ・カバーしています。
マリアンヌ・フェイスフルはこの歌のヒットにより一躍人気歌手となり、有名人との浮名を流しつつ女優としてもデビューし、アラン・ドロン主演の映画「あの胸にもういちど」（La motocyclette/The girl on a motorcycle：1968）のヒロインに抜擢されたことで人気の頂点に立ちました。しかしその後のドラッグ・オーバードース（薬物過量投与、薬物過剰摂取、drug overdose）のスキャンダルによるイメージの崩壊、薬物依存症の悪化により大きな人生の暗転を迎えました。華々しいデビューとその後の人間関係が彼女の理性の歯車を狂わしたのかもしれません。しかし、かといってこの記事でマリアンヌ・フェイスフルに関して報じられたゴシップやスキャンダルの数々を書くつもりはありません。他人には分らない人の人生を表面的な事象で語ることはできないと思うからです。
しかし芸能界からの凋落の底辺においても彼女は歌うことを忘れず、再び静かに復活しました。その苦しみも人には分らないものですが、彼女の半生の経験によって、初々しい歌声がハスキーに変った以上に歌に深みを与えたと思います。彼女は1990年に「As Tears Go By」をセルフカヴァーしました。それはアイドル歌手として歌ったこの歌に人の人生の重みを感じさせる歌唱でもあり、彼女の人生を反映した、本当にマリアンヌ・フェイスフルの歌になったと思います。
