「ジェントル・オン・マイ・マインド」(Gentle On My Mind)はグレン・キャンベル(Glen Travis Campbell:1936-)が歌って1968年グラミー賞ベストフォークパフォーマンス、男性ベストカントリー＆ウエスタンソロボーカルパフォーマンス を受賞したアメリカのフォークシンガー、ジョン・ハートフォード（John Hartford：1937–2001）の歌で、翌年ディーン・マーチンとエルビス・プレスリーもカバーしました。
ジョンハートフォードはタップを踏みながらギターやバンジョー、マンドリンやフィドルを演奏する独特のスタイルを持ったシンガーですが、ソング・ライターとしても多くの美しい歌、あるいは優しい歌を多く書きました。「ジェントル・オン・マイ・マインド」の歌に与えられた名誉はグレン・キャンベルの歌唱に対するものだけというものでしたが、作品があってのパフォーマンスであることを思うと、ジョン・ハートフォードが賞にめぐまれなかったのは同情に値します。彼の死後、ジョン・ハートフォードの活動と功績に対して2005年にアメリカーナ音楽協会（Americana Music Association）会長賞を授与されたことがせめてもの栄誉となりました。
これに対してグレン・キャンベルはグラミー賞受賞曲「恋はフェニックス」や「ラインストーン・カウボーイ」、「哀愁の南」などのヒット曲に恵まれ、類稀な歌唱力でカントリー・ウェスタン・ミュージックに大きな足跡を残し、数々の賞にも恵まれました。
「ジェントル・オン・マイ・マインド」の歌を聴くたびにジョン・ハートフォードとグレン・キャンベルの人気の違いを考えますが、名声には無縁であっても生涯に亘って、自分のなすべきこと、優しい歌を書き続けて歌ったジョン・ハートフォードも素敵な人生を送った人であったと思います。そして、そうした人でなくては書けないであろう歌がこの「ジェントル・オン・マイ・マインド」であるとも思います。
