夏向けのオールド・ソング「ウクレレレディ」です。オールド・ソングと言っても、ウクレレを演奏する人にとっては、立派な現役。ハワイに行くには船旅、裏路地でマリファナを勧められることもなければ、ブランド免税店もなかった1925年からの息が長いスタンダード・ミュージックです。曲は単調、歌詞も難しいこともなく、言ってみれば、暢気なバカンスという感じですが、何故か癒されます。きっと現実では味わえない想像の中のハワイが目に浮かぶからだと思います。最近はテンポを早くして歌うようですが、オリジナルのゆったりとしたものが好みです。
アーロ・ガスリーの1973年のカバーは、本来のアコースティック曲の魅力を残しつつ、さらにモダンにしたもので、ここで紹介したものでは一番親しみやすのではないでしょうか？
ベット・ミドラーのカバーはちょっとアップテンポのポップスバージョンで、この曲の楽しさを引き出していました。
The Temperance Seven（テンペランスセブンは、1920年代スタイルのバンドで、ジョークなのか本気なのか「？」の60年代のイギリスのレトロポップスバンドです。ピンクパンサーのピーター・セラーズがこの歌に参加しているのでジョークです。演奏自体はなかなか雰囲気出していましたが、おふざけで終わっている感は否めませんでした。まあ、これを聴くなら昔のレコード盤を聴く方が良いでしょう。
